087 Staying healthy over Christmas
1. Exercise, try and keep up your current exercise routine, I know its hard at this time of the year with dark cold nights and plenty of excuses not to train but I assure you, you will be thankful come January. If you have been out the night before and don’t feel like that run or trip to the gym, take a walk with a friend and blow out the party cobwebs with the clean crisp fresh air.
2. Relaxation, studies show around the Christmas period stress levels rise by a staggering 55% but it doesn’t have to be this way, by taking some time out everyday to relax can help through this busy period, also prepare and plan, by having a plan you will know exactly where you are and will be able to bask in your achievements when things are ticked off your list.
3. Nutrition, throughout Christmas there are temptations everywhere, puddings, chocolates and plentiful supply of alcohol, but before over indulging just remember to think how its going to make you feel the next day, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, but remember Christmas only comes around once every year so don’t beat yourself up to much just limit your portion size.
4. Water, make sure you drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated, with staff parties and celebrating it becomes very difficult not to over consume alcoholic beverages but this can be restricted by alternating between one drink water one drink alcohol, also remember to rehydrate the day the night before to help detoxify the liver, but again its once a year so do enjoy yourself.
5. Sleep, aim to get at least 7-8hours rest, you don’t need to go to every party and having one night in will not do you any harm, create a nice relaxing environment and treat yourself to your favourite film.
And if all that fails, please don’t beat yourself up about it. Take each day as it comes and strive for a healthier day the next day.
