Our most popular post:

Why are fats important?

Fats have several important roles in the body, including:

. Providing you with energy

. Enabling the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins

. Protecting your organs, nerves and tissues

. Helping regulate body temperature

. Every cell membrane in the body needs fat for protection, and fat is also needed to grow new healthy cells

. Fats are involved in the production of essential hormones in the body

. Maintenance of healthy hair, skin and nails

What are fats?

. Monounsaturated Fats

. Polyunsaturated Fats

. Saturated Fats

. Trans Fats

Are all fats equal?

Trans fats and some saturated fats are bad for you because they raise your cholesterol and increase your risk for heart disease. But monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are good for you, lowering cholesterol and reducing your risk of heart disease.

The Good

Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are known as the “good fats” because they are good for your heart, your cholesterol, and your overall health.

Here are some examples:

. Avocado

. Flaxseed

. Nuts

. Tofu

The Bad

In appearance saturated fats tend to be solid at room temperature, it is sometimes hard to categorise saturated fats as some have good health benefits if eaten in the correct quantity, but if you have poor cholesterol, high blood pressure or other heart disease indicators it may be wise to reduce the amount of saturated fat in your diet.

Here are some examples:

. Butter

. Cheese

. Ice cream

. High fat cuts of meat

The Ugly

"Trans Fats", these again are usually found to be solid at room temperature, trans fats, or hydrogenated oils, are used in the manufacture of food to help it stay fresh longer. They are known as “bad fats” because they increase your risk of disease and elevate cholesterol.

Here are some examples:

. Candy bars

. Packaged snacks

. Commercial baked pastries
