Herniated Or Slipped Disc
A prolapsed intervertebral disc is an extremely painful thing to happen, and having worked with a few clients of where this has occurred I know first hand how debilitating it can be, however training is still possible.
Firstly what is a prolapsed intervertebral disc?
A herniated or slipped disc is when the nucleus pulposus, the gel-like middle of an intervertebral disc bulges out, it compresses surrounding nerve fibres, causing pain, loss of mobility or even paralysis.
Participation in physical activity should avoid any increase in pain and no spinal movements should be forced. While some people will be more comfortable standing, other will prefer to lie down, usually with the knees bent in a supine position. Many people will comment that staying in any one position for a period of time will exacerbate their pain, but sitting is often the most painful position. It is particularly important to practise static abdominal training, to increase the level of support to the spine created by core stabilisation. Abdominal curls should be avoided, as these more than any other exercise increase the load on the lumbar discs. (Reference: CYQ Exercise and fitness knowledge)
