Wipe down the equipment
They say that if you don’t leave the gym dripping with sweat, than you haven’t worked hard enough. But you really don’t want that to be someone else’s sweat.
It’s not a pleasant experience, lying back on a bench or taking a seat on an exercise cycle and being instantly bathed in the foisty moisture of a fellow gym-goer. Take a towel, gents, wipe down any surfaces you’ve sweat onto, and your perspiration will no longer be a cause for consternation.
Return the weights
Another bug bear of many a gym-goer, occasionally the weights you need are mysteriously absent. And, after a good 20 minutes of trying to search for these wayward weights, you’ll suddenly – and unwelcomely – find them when you stub your toe on the hardened steel.
This is easily avoided: If you’re strong enough to take the weights off the rack, then you are most definitely strong enough to put them back. Don’t be the guy who never puts anything back – because, if you lack the wherewithal to complete one workout properly, what does that say about your future prospects?
Keep the phones away
Don’t get us wrong, you can – and should – use your phone to listen to music in the gym. Studies show that the right tunes can pump you up and mentally strengthen your resolve to two or three more sets.
But waiting for a machine to become available whilst the current occupier is busy Instagramming their legs, or sending mass Snapchats, is not fun. And we’re not even going to get started on those loud, obnoxious phonically from the gym floor. We don’t care if you’re getting ‘shredded’, leave your phone in your pocket.
Don't hog the machines
Even if you’re dedicated to the task at hand, your phone is in your pocket the whole time and you’ve got your towel at the ready to wipe down the machine once you’re done, it’s still not the done thing to spend all afternoon on one machine and one machine alone. Get in, work out and then leave. The gym is a community, so sharing is essential – and that means no ‘just one more set bro’ and definitely no leaving your water bottle on a machine to reserve it.
Don't try to chat up women
Possibly the cardinal rule of gym etiquette for gents, do no attempt to flirt between sets. Women, just like men, go to the gym to work out. And, as hard as this may be for you to grasp, even the ones who get made up and look like they’re doing the bare minimum probably aren’t there looking for future husbands.
It’s much more likely they’re there to wear in their new crop top and post pictures of green juice to social media. There’s nothing wrong with friendly conversation, but keep it above board – you may think you’re being clever and gym-appropriate complimenting her ‘glutes’, but everyone knows what you’re talking about…
Enjoy
